Animal Success Stories

Here is Wilbur’s story (aka "Baby Wilby"):

Wilbur, a baby feral pig, was found around May 15th in a rural area near Jeddo, Texas alone and squealing with an injured hind leg. He was only about one week old and his mother had deserted him. He was captured and taken in by the couple who found him. They doctored his injured leg and fed him by a baby bottle for about 2 weeks before giving him to a dear lady who was only visiting here in Texas for a short time. The only place to put Wilbur was in a horse trailer so this became his home. She fed Wilbur every 3 to 4 hours by bottle, all the time worrying about what would become of him when she would have to leave on the 30th of June. She also worried about Wilbur being lonely in the horse trailer with no other pigs for companionship. A small pool was added to the trailer filled with sand and water to create mud for Wilbur to root and wallow in. He loved it! He jumped in and began rooting and spinning around throwing mud everywhere! Wilbur was so adorable; we just had to find him a home. She and her family and friends made numerous phone calls to various organizations and rescue groups trying to find a forever home for Wilbur, only to be turned down time and time again. It seemed hopeless that a permanent home would ever be found, especially in time before she had to leave. Finally a call to Serenity Springs Sanctuary near Denton, Texas on June 16th gave them hope of finding Wilbur a home. Then, late on the night of June 18th, a phone call was received with news that she would have to leave Texas for California the next day, due to a family emergency. An email with an urgent plea to speed up the process of finding a home for Wilbur was sent to Serenity Springs. In just a short time a phone call came in from Serenity Springs saying they had found a home for Wilbur! He was going to be accepted into a loving "forever" home at ATLASTA HOME SANCTUARY in Ennis, Texas by Chris Hinterman. How happy we were because we had all grown to love darling "Baby Wilby". We realize now that all of the places that turned Wilbur down did us a favor because when Wilbur was delivered to his new home nearly 4 hours north of where he was born there was no doubt that this was where he was meant to be. What a wonderful place! Wilbur not only found a home, he found the perfect home with lots of other pigs, all sizes, shapes and colors, for companionship! He can now run and play outside in the fresh air instead of being cooped up alone in a horse trailer. He will have food, shelter, and love from now on. Life is wonderful now for "Baby Wilby". At Last A Home, after being turned away so many times! What a perfect name for such a wonderful sanctuary. -Lesta Maijala
